Can you believe it will have taken 243 years for Mozart's 8th opera Lucio Silla to get its Chicago Premiere? It was first performed on 26 December 1772 at the Teatro Regio Ducal in Milan and you will be able to see it September 26th - October 4th at COT.
Here are two recordings to prepare yourself for this stunning opera:
Deutsche Gramophon: Leopold Hager with Peter Schreier, Arleen Augér, Helen Donath, Edith Mathis, Julia Varady, Werner Krenn, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra (with libretto). It lasts 211' and is considered the complete reference recording.
Teldec (recorded June 1989 on period instruments): Nikolaus Harnoncourt with Peter Schreier, Edita Gruberova, Cecilia Bartoli, Dawn Upshaw and Yvonne Kenny, Vienna Concentus Musicus (Teldec 2292-44928-2, 2 CD). Score is considerably cut, some aris omitted, and drops the marginal role of Aufidio. This version is about one hour shorter than the complete Philips/Hager recording.
